Hi Devika, The point here is not about the purpose of the Usability reviews and everyone in the field of User Experience design are aware of Heuristic Evaluation. The point is about the quality of these reviews. Companies have to ensure that the process implemented gives genuine results instead of focusing on 'number of reviews done..' , one person claiming the number of reviews done etc.
The whole idea of these reviews are to identify usability problems and in the way to get this ensure proper people are placed, people have good amount of time to do reviews etc.

Hi Kumar, Thank You.
Answering your questions on mitigating the risks, the documentation project was well planned to include a bit of buffer to factor in for the unforeseen design changes that had an impact on the information already documented in the Hardware Owner's Manual.

Opinions of the documentation strategist and the team manager provided useful insights to address challenges. Multiple opinions on certain features were settled by involving the SMEs and core team members in calls, which helped us to reach to a consensus without losing on time. Extracts of the revised sections were sent to the specialists concerned, who verified the updates for technical accuracy.

Photographs of the modified hardware components indicating the changes were used to help the illustrator understand the changes in the design. Illustration related comments were extracted separately from the document to help the illustrator save time without the need to skim through the entire document.
These were some of the aspects that helped to meet the deadlines. Hope this answers your questions.

In the "Comparison between Traditional Help and Mobile Help" section, the first line reads "The following table ...", but my browser (IE8) shows no table, only plain text.

I looked at the HTML source; the text is in tags.

Philip, Sheena,

Congrats on winning the award for the PowerEdge R810 Hardware Owner’s Manual! Thanks for writing about the effort that went into the manual.

It'd be interesting to know how you handled the challenges you've described: last-minute changes, revising illustrations, conflicting opinions from Dev team members. Could you provide some more insight into that?

Classification based on dominant behavioral styles for result-oriented communion seems impeccable but two obsevations may need consideration -
1] If dominant trait of your own behavioral style is very powerful, it may also influence, through communication, the behavioral style of the SME, at least while dealing with you ;
2] Identifying dominant behavioral style and then classifying SMEs on that basis may, by itself,be a more skilled job than effectively communicating with them.

Hi Kavitha - Usability Reviews (and Expert Reviews) are typically qualitative, although severity of the issues identified can be rated. Here’s an online article on the same FYI - http://www.useit.com/papers/heuristic/heuristic_evaluation.html
Reviews are also usually not checklist based. (Although various guideline / principles / heuristics may be referred to or referenced in the report in order to validate the issues identified by reviewers.)

Reviews are typically done over a couple of days –depending on the complexity of what is being reviewed. (The knowledge transfer for a complex application itself can take an hour!)
Besides needing time to understand the application and time to review it, it is important that the reviewers are trained in conducting reviews, to avoid invalid / subjective issue identification.

Not sure what you mean when you say the reviews you did were for selfish purposes. The idea of doing a review is to flush out usability issues related to various aspects of the UI (like navigation, IA, visual design, wording etc.) – So the objective is definitely to focus on the quality / improving the ease of use of the application.

I have few comments with respect to the usability reviews and with regards to involvement of Technical communicators.I have worked in Software services company earlier. The reviews were quantitively focused and were for selfish purposes but the actual focus on the quality of the websites or web applications is not of priority. Just imagine a group of 3 or 4 people spending an hour and providing review comments on the application. Whether it is information architect or visual designer or technical writer, one would need a good amount of time for understanding the application. Context will be missing with the checklists. One has to be very careful in recommending this type of reviews as these are quantitative. There were many instances where the clients were firing back with these review comments. I would suggest the design groups to be extra careful in setting up these practices in their organizations.

One knows that life is expensive, but people require cash for various stuff and not every man gets enough money. Therefore to get quick <a href="http://bestfinance-blog.com/topics/home-loans" rel="nofollow">home loans</a> and just bank loan would be good solution.

Mak and Gyanesh - Thank you so much for this informative research.
There is no denying the fact that Indian Technical writers are high in demand. If we improve the quality and organize it, the demand would go further high. We can only hope that some Indian University or Institute of repute comes out with a course on Technical Writing which combines Information designing with engineering subjects.
The field of technical writing is so vast that developing a course to suit all verticals is difficult.
The course may be further divided into verticals like Aerospace, Medical/Pharmaceutical, Information Technology and Legal.

Thanks,
Ahmar
